Match the stored stream

Some recorders support dual-stream recording. For example, one Hikvision model datasheet lists that capability and distinguishes video-only from video-and-audio stream types; check the exact recorder rather than assuming this applies to every system.

Record the selected stream type, configured bitrate mode and schedule alongside the bitrate value so another person can reproduce the estimate.

Variable bitrate needs representative measurements

Movement, lighting, image detail and encoder settings can change the amount of data produced. A single short or quiet sample may not represent a full recording period.

Axis explains that variable-bitrate storage can be unpredictable as scene activity changes. That describes Axis bitrate-control guidance, not a universal rate for every manufacturer. Record the observed average, measurement window and busy-scene context, then model a higher scenario without labelling it a prediction.

The WD estimator states that its result uses manufacturer-determined compression assumptions and that actual needs vary with system settings and other factors. Treat its output as a WD estimate, not a universal conversion.
